What to expect as a brother?
Unpredictable? Spontaneous? Upbeat? How can you describe being a brother in Pi Kappa Phi? It is nearly impossible to include all aspects of being a brother in Pi Kappa Phi at Mercer University. However, here are a few points that are important to note.
Philanthropy Work
Pi Kappa Phi is always looking for ways to get involved within the community. Each semester, the brotherhood will participate in three of four different sorority philanthropy events aimed at raising money and awareness for an organization. In addition, throughout the year the brotherhood makes it a point to send a group of guys to Push America's Give-A-Push Weekend to better the lives of people with disabilities.
During the Fall semester, the brotherhood hosts a week long "No Boundaries Week" to raise money for people with physical and mental disabilities. The week includes an Awareness Dinner, 24/7 Scaffold and Raffle sitting, and War of Roses (a sorority fundraising event).
In the summer, the brotherhood has several brothers that volunteer and donate their time and efforts to help Push America with the Journey of Hope and Gear up Florida cycling events, which ride across their respected routes in order to help people with disabilities.
The Fraternity House
Mercer University has eight fraternity houses located on campus, all of which are located in Mercer’s Greek Village. Pi Kappa Phi is located between the Kappa Alpha Psi and Alpha Kappa Alpha Houses. The fraternity house has ten bedrooms, plus a Chapter Room/Living Room, Chapter Office, and kitchen. A meal plan is available to the brothers that live in the house and once brothers are Sophomores they are given the opportunity to live in the house.
Life as a Brother
The Social Life
Working hard deserves playing hard, and Pi Kappa Phi understands that college is supposed to be some of the greatest years of anyone's life. Mixers, formals, date parties, band parties, basketball tailgates, cookouts, along with the spontaneousity that can be found within the fraternity come together to form an outstanding social schedule. The fall semester of 2009 played host to a number of band parties, date parties, cookouts and tailgates, mixers, and a Gentlemen’s Ball formal, while the Spring semester is quickly filling up.
Academics
The Brothers of Pi Kappa Phi sometimes hate to admit it, but the real reason that every person is here at Mercer University, is because of academics. The fraternity makes available resources for all brothers to help them with study skills and grades. A scholarship chairman helps ensure academic success of associates and brothers by arranging twice weekly study sessions and tutors, and keeping a watch on the grades of the Associate Members and the Brotherhood. Also, scholarship checks, through the Robert Lee Bennett Scholarship Foundation, gives out checks to brothers every spring, who exemplify good standards of academics, this scholarship helps cut dues nearly in half.
Athletics
Each year, Pi Kappa Phi participates in a number of intramural sports at Mercer University, as well as other leagues outside of the Recreation Department. Whether you play flag football, basketball, baseball, soccer, ultimate frisbee, golf, volleyball, or just looking for a weightlifting partner, there are always brothers ready to participate.
